Happened to speak to a fellow from Immigration and Customs the other day; reading between the lines, and adding what I see in the national media, I get the strong impression that Immigration is about to ramp up workplace inspections and raids - big time. Such enforcement, in the past, has mostly targeted janitorial contractors in grocery and big-box stores, often enmeshing the client - the store owner - in both the legal liability and the negative publicity (we're a janitorial service in Phoenix AZ).
For years - long before the current emphasis on illegal immigration - we've guaranteed, to our clients, tight screening (background checks, etc.) on all those that we allow into their facilities. Social Security number based credit checks (to identify multiple users of the same name and SSN) and other screening techniques give us a good handle on the identity of the individual we're back-grounding; knowing for sure who the applicant is seems a real good start on running a relevant background check, and assures us of his legal status. So we don't foresee a problem here.
Might be a good idea for those firms employing outside janitor services to look closely at personnel screening procedures used by their janitor service; sure beats having the fellows in the green vans pulling up to the door.
(Anybody know - does Immigration still use green vans?)
