While I'm thinking about back-grounding and security, I'll mention that we routinely do a couple of checks that many firms neglect (we're in janitorial service in Phoenix AZ). On a quarterly basis we check driving records on all of our folks who drive on the job. Not only does this warn us of potential driving safety issues, but it helps prevent an unexpected "no-show" due to someone's being picked up on an outstanding traffic warrant.
Also, the Maricopa County Sheriff maintains an on line database of outstanding warrants in many jurisdictions in the State; checking the database early in the pre-employment process saves us an occasional hassle later on.
